How to Change the Font in Your Instagram Bio

Updated: May 18

Instagram is built as a social media platform to showcase rich images and engaging video. By design, the text on Instagram plays second fiddle to the visual content. Still, that text is important for both adding context and enriching the imagery with information. With this text-second approach to social media, there isn’t much wiggle room to add a lot of formatting to your bio or posts. Still, have you ever wanted to change the font on your Instagram bio? It turns out you can!

What Font Does Instagram Use?

Let’s back up and consider what Instagram offers. Instagram uses one font, Instagram Sans. It is crisp, easy to read, and perfectly complements the platform, which is focused images. According to Instagram, "Instagram Sans is our new, global typeface. The glyph and wordmark inspired this custom style that nods to our heritage." and it "reflects the shape of the glyph and our commitment to simplicity and craft. The in-between moments of a perfect circle and a square, which we lovingly call the "squircle," show up throughout the typeface." They've put a lot of thought and effort into the font to make it work seamlessly for users (learn more about that here). Still, you may want to switch it up now and again to be a bit creative or to help your content stand out.

How to Change the Font in Your Instagram Bio

First, find an Ig font generator that creates stylish text fonts and cool symbols in Instagram-supported Uni Code characters. I use igfonts.io, which is a quick and easy option. Input your text, choose your font, copy, and paste, and you are done.

Best Practices When Using a Different Font on Instagram

While switching up your fonts on Instagram can be fun and creative, keep a few things in mind. The Instagram Sans font has a lot of thought and effort put into why it works so well, so take a few lessons from it, including keeping things simple to let your visual content shine.

Other best practices include:

  • Make sure your font is legible and easy to read

  • Don't use more than one font (I do, on occasion, combine a fun font with Instagram Sans).

  • Consider accessibility when choosing any additional fonts

  • Have fun!
